Dogs live anywhere from eight to 15 years, depending on their breed, genetics, overall size and living environment. Much like humans, there are a number of variables that influence the lifespan of individual dogs, so it is important to take this into consideration when working out how long your dog might live for.
“A dog’s lifespan is dependent on factors such as their size, breed and lifestyle but, while we can estimate based on previous studies, every pet is different and there is no way of knowing with any certainty how long they will live,” PDSA vet Claire Roberts tells Country Living.
When it comes to the dog breeds with the longest lifespans, it is usually the smallest breeds that survive the longest. Claire adds: “On average, small dogs live between seven and 14 years, medium dogs between eight and 13 years, and large dogs between five and 13 years. Some, however, may live well into their twenties.”

As well giving them a lovely home, a healthy lifestyle can extend how long our pups live for. “Ensuring your pet is in the best health is key to ensuring they live a long and happy life – this includes being fed an appropriate diet, getting enough exercise to maintain a healthy weight and being up to date with vaccinations and health checks,” Claire explains.
Every pet is different, so these ages should only be taken as a rough guide. If your pet leads a healthy, active life that isn’t cut short because of disease or trauma, they could live a very long time.
